Visual Artist Shan Shan Sheng debuts her site-specific sculpture Abacus at Venice 's OPEN,
an International Exhibition of Sculptures and Installations. This tenth edition of OPEN will be held at the same time as the Venice Film Festival, from August 30th to October 14th 2007.
OPEN is a series of open-air exhibition spaces at Venice Lido. The OPEN Exhibition gives
space to artistic creativity from all over the world.

Shan Shan Sheng represents both China and the USA in the OPEN exhibition. Internationally renowned for her paintings and glassworks, Shan Shan Sheng mines her heritage with Abacus, part of her larger Chinese Inventions Series , reviving often overlooked objects from the past.
In Abacus, Sheng's vivid brushstrokes of color are suspended in translucent glass. Abacus is a
glass sculpture recalling the ancient Chinese counting machine.  Sheng recasts the abacus as a
kind of vast, pre-digital computer and evokes the constant numbering of modern life.

Abacus 1046-771 BC (Western Zhou Dynasty)
from "Chinese ancient invention series"

It is an outdoor glass sculpture, measuring 4.5 m long and 2.2 m high, with 63 glass balls supported by stainless steel rods.   Throughout her work, Sheng transforms Eastern and Western motifs into striking paintings and sculpture, often re-interpreting ancient symbols into minimal, contemporary forms. Sheng's work invites viewers to see through time and material, true to her refreshing, integrated vision of art and life. Sheng is the first Chinese visual artist to be invited to collaborate with Venetian Glass experts.

Sheng discovered in Venice a way to translate her large-scale Abstract Expressionist paintings into new forms. Reversing the trajectory of Marco Polo, the Venetian explorer who visited China and wrote about his encounters, Sheng collaborates closely with the master glassblowers of Murano to mix and arrange pigments for sculptures and installations. Sheng's glass works are marked by ethereal streaks and speckles that reflect her hand and line. This time-honored Western technique provides an ideal mode for breathing fresh life into the Eastern traditions that shaped her childhood and still inform her artistic perspective. Sheng has successfully honed her technique during recent years while collaborating with master glass blowers in Murano, Italy.

Sheng's Abacus work addressed the past and present. Still used to teach children how to add, subtract, multiply and divide, the abacus need not become obsolete in the rush of data and technology that now consumes society. The gem-like beads of Sheng's abacus evoke smooth transitions without glossing over the complexities which inform our vivid, globalize world.

Raised in mainland China , Sheng furthered her education and artistic development in the United States, settling in San Francisco where she resides. Shan-Shan Sheng has held over thirty one-woman shows in Europe , Asia and America. Her paintings and sculptures appear in numerous international collections, including Harvard University, National Art Museums in Beijing, Shanghai Art museum; Exxon Corporation, the Art Museum of South Texas, and the Berengo Collection in Venice, Italy.  In last 15 years Sheng  has completed over 20  large-scale projects in states of California, Arizona, Massachusetts, Florida, Taxes and New Mexico, Cities of Miami, Chicago, Denver, Shanghai, Beijing, Venice, Taipei and Hong Kong. Sheng is an artist whose universal messages can be appreciated anywhere in the world.

To celebrate the OPEN exhibition's tenth anniversary, Curator Paolo De Grandis has increased the number of the artists and countries taking part, collaborating with the various institutions
that operate in the contemporary sphere, with a view to creating a network of exchange among the centers located in the various areas of Venice and the rest of the world.

OPEN is organized by Arte Communications and by Venice City Council's the Department of Culture, and sponsored by the Italian Ministry of the Cultural Heritage, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Veneto Region, the Province of Venice and Venice City Council.

OPEN combines the presence of important artists such as Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Lee Ufan, John Henry, Beverly Pepper and historic figures of contemporary art such as Sandro Chia and Giuseppe Spagnulo, with the works of already recognized, talented young artists such as Daniele Nitti Sotres, Antonella Zazzera and Enzo Castagno, while also continuing to present promising artists whose talent has still to be discovered. The successful formula of the Academies continues with the presence of
the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts. Again, this year the presence of Asian artists is particularly numerous and feature work by Hu Xiangcheng, Li Chen, Shi Jinsong, Xiang Jin and Shan-Shan Sheng.
