JOHN SLAVIK *SCULPTURE

Slavik’s work comes in all sizes, and a variety of materials.  Sometimes he introduces a completely in congruous material and found elements in a manner reminiscent of Lucas Samaras.
His visual skill enables him to be effective in clarifying conceptual ideas.  The structures can be read whole or taken apart encouraging the viewer to decipher visual clues.
There are times recognizable imagery is apparent this levels poignancy and power and establishes an immediate tension between simple forms and the weight of issues presented.
What makes the work so intriguing is his ability to use forms and concepts derived from primitive and modern periods to create works that define 21-century formalism.  This is an art of conception, occasionally transforming into human personifications developing a dialogue rich in nuance.
Recently he had attempted to reduce some of his forms to the barest essentials, other contain compilations of shapes, exploring the subtle distinctions between objects that can change the viewers experience and interpretation.
Slavik latest body of work is in transition, revealing a healthy restlessness questioning material and form.  These new explorations promise to carry both artist and viewer into a rich new sculptural terrain.
