| BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION:
From charcoal, to acrylic, to oils and paper
mache, there are few media untested by Brooklyn-based artist John
Sebastian. Drawing on his inner sense of rhythm and a desire
to depict movement on paper, Sebastian builds depth into his work by
layering oil crayon on paper, laminated paper on canvas, and canvas
on clay.
Raised in Brooklyn, the artist grew up in a
family infused with artists. His father is a jazz musician and
visual artist, and his uncle an accomplished guitar player and
maker; all are skilled craftsmen and artisans. Generations of
talent influenced a young Sebastian who from an early age took
pencil in hand. Drawing was not a creative outlet as much as a
reflex and an instinct.
As music held such prominent role in the
family, he naturally took to learning guitar, and incorporated his
musical sensibilities into his visual art. A completely
self-taught artist, Sebastian handles realism as easily and
skillfully as abstraction. His portraits are poignant and
arresting; his abstract works a flurry of color, brush stroke, and
motion. Paintings
