ABACUS1046-771 BC (Western Zhou Dynasty)

Abacus is a glass sculpture recalling the ancient Chinese counting machine. Sheng recasts the abacus as a

kind of vast, pre-digital computer and evokes the constant numbering of modern life. It is an outdoor glass sculpture, measuring 4.5 m long and 2.2 m high, with 63 glass balls supported by stainless steel rods. Sheng collaborates closely with the master glassblowers of Murano to mix and arrange pigments for sculptures and installations. Sheng's glass works are marked by ethereal streaks and speckles that reflect her hand and line.
